Oman power and water market overview
Oman’s power and water authorities continue to support the private electricity and water developers to do business in the Sultanate through a number of independent water and power projects (IWPPs) and independent water projects (IWPs). Annual demand for power and water is expected to increase 10% and 5% per year respectively and is likely to prompt a renewed focus on IWPPs and IWPs, and subsequently provide more opportunities for international companies to secure major contract awards. Enhancing the involvement of the private sector will not only strengthen the capabilities of the public sector, it will also introduce competition which will result in customer-facing companies and organisations to re-evaluate their customer service polices.
In addition, Oman has pledged to ensure an estimated 10% of the country’s energy is generated from sustainable sources by 2020. The drive towards sustainability is reflected in:
- An increase in the diffusion of energy-efficient technologies
- Expansion of treated sewage effluent water facilities and
- Implementation of solar projects in rural areas for 2013
Testimonials
The main challenges energy regulators are facing are common in the Gulf and ERRA Region as well; energy security and reliability, affordability and climate change measures. The regional market building could assist us solving these issues. Even though there are serious obstacles, which could hinder efficient competition and effective market integration in the developing markets, the general market tendencies and the system-operation effect of the increasing renewable ratio strengthen the need for harmonization of rules and connecting markets. On the Oman Summit you will have the chance to understand the electricity market tendencies of other regions, which are in the phase of market buildingDr. Gabor Szorenyi, General Secretary, Energy Regulators Regional Association (ERRA)
The U.S. Embassy has developed a strong list of interested U.S. water treatment companies through our inaugural “Direct Line to U.S. Business” investor webinar last May. The Oman Power & Water Summit is the first event gathering key industry stakeholders and providing them with informative updates on Oman’s power and water projects as well as useful industry insights. Since improving energy efficiency is one of PAEW’s key objectives, we hope that the second edition of the Oman Power & Water Summit will attract even more local and international industry experts to share their ideas on optimising the use of electricity and water resources and enhancing energy efficiency. We look forward to hearing about policies and strategies implemented abroad that we can learn from and use to adapt best practices to respond to our country’s needs. H.E. No longer are the utility services of electricity and water either “dull” or “backwater”. Energy policy is top of the agenda in Oman, just as it is in Great Britain and the European Union. The triple challenge of ensuring security of supply, affordability and reducing carbon emissions is a common global theme. Industry models, regulation and structures are at the heart of the resolution of these challenges. The Oman Power and Water Summit 2013 is focussed on addressing these issues in Oman and provides the opportunity to listen to other countries’ experiencesStuart Cook, Managing Director , E-Serve and Board Member, OFGEM, UK (Key speaker at OPWS 2013))

Because of the orography and climatology in Spain—incidentally, very similar, in many aspects to that of Oman, the need for water has become a number one priority for the people and the authorities in Spain. Therefore, it is no wonder that Spanish companies in the water sector are among the leading ones in the world. With respect to desalination, its use is rising in Spain and around the world. Spain is playing a key role in this development… The 190,000 m3/day Al Ghubrah Independent Water Project (IWP) in Muscat was awarded to a consortium with a top Spanish company in the sector… This is why this summit is very welcome and of outmost interest to the Spanish Embassy, its Trade Office and the Spanish companies in the sectorH.E. Jose Luis Rosello Serra, Ambassador, Embassy of Spain (VIP speaker at OPWS 2013)
